In today’s world, more and more people are starting to focus on taking care of themselves and improving their overall well-being. They’re doing this with treatments that, might seem trendy to some, have actually been used for centuries—treatments like saunas, hot tubs, and cold plunges.

Which do you prefer, hot or cold? Thankfully, there’s no need to wander around searching and feeling lost anymore. The answers can be found below.

From the dry heat of a sauna to the relaxing warmth of a hot tub to the take-your-breath-away chill of a cold plunge, temperature-based treatments have become a popular way for people to relax, recover, and support overall wellness.  Each one serves a very distinct purpose, and it’s important to know when to choose hot when to choose cold, and when to stay somewhere in the middle.

Saunas

Saunas have been around for centuries. They  originated largely for bathing, hygiene, warmth, and social purposes.  They have transformed into one of the most favored self-care activities in today’s world. The benefits of sauna sessions may  include the following:

May Support Faster Muscle Recovery

Sauna baths can reduce tension and increase blood circulation, resulting in faster recovery and less soreness.

Increased Detoxification

Many people report feeling refreshed after sauna sessions due to increased sweating.

May Help Relieve Minor Muscle Soreness

The dry heat of a sauna dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow, which may may help temporarily relieve minor muscle soreness

May Support Recovery

Sauna use may temporarily increase heart rate and lead to short-term water weight loss through sweating. It should not be considered a substitute for exercise or a balanced diet for long-term weight management.

In addition to traditional saunas, infrared saunas are also making their mark in the health and wellness world. Unlike typical saunas that use hot air to warm your body, these saunas use infrared lamps to warm your body directly. Many people find infrared saunas more comfortable because they operate at lower ambient temperatures.

 HOT TUBS

Although hot tubs are mostly known for their recreational purposes, we can’t overlook the fact that they can also deliver plenty of health benefits! Hot tubs  may  boost physical and mental health in the following ways.

Support Relaxation and Well-Being

The relaxing effects of a hot tub can relieve stress, calm your nervous system, and improve your mood.

May Help Relieve Minor Muscle Soreness

Warm water immersion may help temporarily ease minor muscle soreness and stiffness for some people.

May Support Cardiovascular Wellness

Soaking in hot water can widen your blood vessels, which can help lower blood pressure. However, if you already have low blood pressure, be careful because it could drop even more.

May Promote Healthy Circulation

Hot tubs can help with circulation, which can reduce symptoms of certain health issues.

Better Sleep

The muscle-relaxing, stress-reducing effects of hot tubs can help prep your body for a great night of sleep.

Although it’s safe to use a hot tub every day, there are some precautions you should take. Only use hot tubs if they are regularly cleaned and well-maintained (hot tubs are breeding grounds for germs). If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, consult your healthcare provider before using a hot tub. Elevated water temperatures may not be recommended during pregnancy. don’t let the water exceed 104 degrees, listen to your body and get out if you’re dizzy or experience a headache, avoid the use of alcohol or drugs while hot tubbing, and limit your dips to no more than 15 minutes. If the water temperature is between 95-100, you can stretch that time to 30 minutes.

Remember, the most important safety tip for hot tubs is to keep them locked when not in use! Hot tubs are a natural and dangerous curiosity for small children.

COLD PLUNGE THEREPY

Cold plunge, ice baths, cold water immersion, polar plunging … whatever you call it, this therapy is designed to help your mind and body reset, recover, and rejuvenate. By immersing yourself in extremely cold water, you may enjoy numerous health benefits, including the following:

Reduce Inflammation

People who are active tend to love cold plunges because it can help lessen muscle soreness and reduce inflammation similar to the way that an ice pack can.

Increase Energy Levels

The sudden contact with cold water stimulates the body’s sympathetic nervous system, better known as its “fight-or-flight” response, and may trigger a flood of energy.

 Potential Immune System Benefits

Some studies suggest regular cold-water exposure may influence certain immune system responses, but more research is needed.

May Support Metabolic Activity

Cold exposure has been associated with activation of brown adipose tissue, although its effects on long-term calorie expenditure remain under study.

To plunge safely, make sure the water isn’t too cold (50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit), limit your sessions to no more than 5-10 minutes, never cold plunge alone, and avoid if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, deep vein thrombosis, and peripheral neuropathy.

Before you start diving into bodies of water and ice, take the time to understand the benefits versus the risks. Cold plunging should always be done in small doses because it can potentially lead to cardiovascular stress, hypothermia, hyperventilation, muscle cramps, and drowning. Due to these risks, it’s always good to Consult a qualified healthcare professional before beginning sauna or cold-water therapy, particularly if you are pregnant or have cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other medical conditions.

SAUNA and COLD PLUNGE COMBINED

Some wellness professionals recommend that combining cold plunging with a sauna session can provide greater physical and mental health benefits compared to doing them separately. However, it's important to consider the duration of each activity, which should be tailored to your goals and fitness levels, and discussed with your doctor.

Additionally, a hot sauna and cold plunge may not be suitable for everyone. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment or therapy, particularly if you are pregnant or have underlying health issues.
